The events in Charlottesville are just the latest example of the deep fractures in American society. We are at a critical moment in American history and we have critical choices to make: about how we treat each other, how we talk to each other and how we live in community with each other.
The One America Movement believes we should treat all people with respect, and all people means ALL people. Make no mistake: the ideology of White Supremacy is completely at odds with that ideal. We should denounce hate and racism unequivocally.
As Republican Senator Orrin Hatch put it, “My brother didn’t give his life fighting Hitler for Nazi ideas to go unchallenged here at home.”
As we denounce racism and hate, let’s also pledge to respond with love, to reject the tribalism and polarization that divide us. Now, more than ever, let’s get out of our comfort zones and meet people who are different from us. Now, more than ever, let’s serve together, work together, eat together, talk together, listen together and bind up this nation’s wounds together.
Now, more than ever, let’s build One America.
